The fly by…day five.

It’s 11:00pm, I just got home from work about a half hour ago. A fourteen hour workday of complete stress and anxiety for opening night. I looked up at one point and it was almost 2pm, I thought hmm maybe I should eat some lunch. It was that kind of day. Stress on that level makes me want to reenact the Augustus Gloop scene from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory where he pretty much sucks down half the chocolate river in Wonkaville or whatever it’s called.

Just as the show is about to start, we are in the lobby helping the last of the patrons when one of our regulars brings a giant bag to me. “This is for you and your staff, enjoy.” I knew I was in trouble when I saw the box. It’s from one of the great bakeries in town. The BonBonerie is known for lots of things but where I work it’s know for it’s Opera Creme Torte, it’s a spectacular, finely tuned, powerful confection. I thought about it, thought about how I could just have a little (which would be about 500 calories) everyone would understand if I made an exception (except I didn’t say I was going to make good decisions except when there was Opera Cream Torte around!) so I announced in a panicky blabbering outburst to Scott and Casey that I was not eating any cake. It was over. I didn’t eat cake tonight. Lori 1, Cake 0. You know the rest of that damn thing is in the fridge at the office so I am hopping tomorrow I can say Lori 2, Cake 0.  I am already a winner because I had my plan and stuck with it for the day, the only thing I had that deviated from it was a little ranch dressing on my salad at dinner. It’s not Opera Cream Torte but few things are….

Casey and Melissa were pretty excited, and were selfless in their willingness to eat my portion.

Yeah I know, the inside is not for the faint of heart…or blood sugar.

In the end it’s not that having a piece of cake would have been awful or wrong, but I gave my word to myself, you and Tristan that I was going to do my best and in the end it just wasn’t worth if for me. I would have felt awful tomorrow, and truth is I am thinking about going to the gym in the morning before work….

Right now I am exhausted. Goodnight everyone and sweet, sweet opera cream dreams!

That torte looks so rich that I would imagine it could make you nauseous especially if you’ve been cutting back lately. Console yourself with the thought that it might have made you feel worse. I’d love to try some, though.

I never feel great after eating that particular cake, but it is delicious for sure. You should make Shannon take you there for lunch, it is really great. Then you could get a taste of the cake! 🙂 x
